  Chapter Eight

Colt threw down his pen. Without Whitney he was totally crap at these crossword puzzles. It wasn’t only her knowledge of words that he missed. He missed her company too. Her dry wit and the way they could laugh together. He leaned back on the bed. He had to admit it had been more lust than anything else when he’d spotted her that day at the university. He’d tried to resist her, but when it came to Whitney it was too tough, and he was too weak.

He fingered his cell phone. He was tempted to call her but realizing she’d be in bed by now. He wondered if she was sleeping in his bed or the one in the guest room.

Colt tapped the spot on the bed beside him, realizing just how lonely he’d been since his divorce. Sure he had Mark, his daughter-in-law, and the grandbaby, but they had their own lives. He didn’t want to intrude by pestering them to visit more, or even suggesting they take trips together as one big happy family.

His work didn’t even satisfy him like it once had. He hadn’t realized that until Whitney strolled into his life. He made a note to send her flowers first thing in the morning. He didn’t know if younger guys did that anymore. He hoped not. He hoped she’d like the way an older guy courted a woman.

Whitney arrived back from grocery shopping to find a package sitting on the door step. She opened the door and carried it inside, thinking that it was something for Colt. But instead her name was written on the envelope attached to the paper wrapping. She opened it and smiled.

  “Thought you’d enjoy these while I’m away-Colt”

She ripped off the paper and saw an assortment of flowers in various colors. She put her nose to the pink rose in the middle and enjoyed its scent. She’d top up the water in their vase and then unpack the groceries. Most of it was things she was replenishing for Colt, including his beer. She’d then do the laundry she’d seen sitting in the bin in the bathroom. He’d probably appreciate her washing his shirts and yes, underwear too.

She found a Tim McGraw CD and slipped it into Colt’s CD player. Then she got to work. By the time she turned to the laundry, it was early evening. She dug through the bin for Colt’s shirts. His scent drifted up toward her. The spicy cologne that she loved so much. She took off her t-shirt and pants, threw off her bra to go into the wash and was about to go get her sweats when she decided to put on one of Colt’s shirts. It felt cool on her skin, sexy almost. She lifted the laundry bin and headed downstairs to the washing machine. Halfway there, she noticed one of his cowboy hats hanging on a peg by the door. She reached for it and placed it on her head as she swung her hips to the music and she walked toward the laundry room.

I feel happy again. Like I used to before that day.

She opened up the door on the washing machine and loaded everything, reaching over to set the dials.

“So this is what young people get up to now.”

She froze. It was Colt’s deep, sexy voice. He was home. She turned around and smiled as he headed toward her.

“My shirt and hat never look that good on me.”

She stood on tip-toes to kiss him. “I didn’t think you’d be back until tonight.”

“Obviously not. I mean with the music, and using my cowboy hat and shirt like this.”

He hooked his finger through one of the button holes and pulled her in close.

“When I walked through the door you looked so sexy bending over the washing machine. That was quite a homecoming.”

She turned around and bent over again. Looking over her shoulder, she smiled.

Whitney felt him press his thighs against her butt, his erection more than obvious. He pulled her panties down and glided his hand through her cheeks and found her entrance. She went on tiptoe when he began circling it, making her wetter and more slippery on each pass. His finger slipped inside her as he kissed the back of her neck.

“You okay with us doing this? I mean this way?” he asked.

  “Oh yeah.”

He pulled out of her and then she heard him opening his fly. A moment later, he was pushing her thighs apart.

She grabbed the knobs on the machine as he slid into her channel in one smooth movement. Colt held both her breasts as he thrust forward and then upward, almost lifting her up off the floor. She grabbed the controls harder as perspiration began pooling on her forehead and between her breasts.

He teased her nipples until they felt like cement and thrust harder and deeper until she sensed herself slipping into something like warm velvet. Her legs shook and her breasts ached. She knew her climax was building on each of his thrusts. His breathing got heavier by her ear as he took her closer and closer, and then her orgasm had control. She almost cried out but instead dug her toes into the wood flooring and pulled on the knobs.

Colt playfully bit the nape of her neck as he found release.

“That’s one way to the do the laundry,” he whispered.

“Yeah, about that…I think I might have broken one of the knobs on your washing machine.”

  They burst out laughing.

  Chapter Nine

“Damn, I spent a good part of last night trying to figure out those two words and you’ve done it in seconds. Not just beauty but brains, too.”

She kissed his cheek. “It’s easy if you try.”

“You any good with jigsaw puzzles, because Mark gives me one every Christmas. I’ll be damned if I can ever finish one.”

“You think I’m good with crossword puzzles? Jigsaws are my specialty.”

She took a swig of beer from the bottle and handed it to him.

“So you think you’d like to stick around in Missoula for a bit?”

She nodded. “Coming home was just what I needed.”

  “And law school.”

“I think I’d like to give it a try.”

“And how about a relationship with an older cowboy?” He put on his hat.

She tipped it back so she could see his face again. “I think I’d like to give that a try, too.”

He smiled and handed the beer to her.

“If he gets past his sell by date I can always trade him in,” she said.

“You, missy, are heading the right way for a good spanking.”

  “You promise?”
